Digital Marketing is not a job, it’s a skill
I’m sure you’re thinking about how to learn digital marketing but aren’t sure where to start. Well, there are many ways and the good news is you don’t have to take a course (unless you want to). There are some great courses and training programs out there that I personally recommend, but today I’m going to list out the best, free and cheap ways to learn digital marketing.
Digital Marketing is a skill that anyone can learn, even if you don’t have a background in marketing. It’s also a skill that anyone can do, even if they have no technical skills or coding knowledge. Digital Marketing is a combination of creativity, business knowledge and coding skills. Digital marketing is not just about marketing on the internet but also about marketing to people who are already on the internet. It encompasses traditional techniques like SEO and SEM as well as newer techniques such as content marketing and social media marketing (SMM).
Digital Marketing has become more important than ever before because we live in an age where more people are searching for information online rather than from their local newspapers or television stations. As a digital marketer you will be responsible for effectively promoting businesses using online methods like search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (PPC) advertising, email marketing, website design and development and social media marketing.
Skills do not depreciate
Here is the truth most people do not want to accept: Once you invest in a skill, your investment never goes down in value. It may seem obvious, but we are often misled into thinking that our investments will depreciate over time as new technologies and systems keep coming up.
When it comes to digital marketing skills, that is incorrect. Here are some examples of skills that will absolutely serve you for a lifetime:
Search engine optimization (SEO) – SEO is all about ranking higher in search results. This means that your website will be more visible in the search engines for a particular topic, like “best pizza in New York City.” It also means that your sales and traffic can increase substantially with the right SEO strategies.
Social media – Social media is one of the best ways to connect with potential clients and customers. Your social media skills can serve you well for more than just business purposes; they can help you develop relationships, find friends and even meet the love of your life!
Email marketing – Email marketing is a powerful tool to connect with customers and prospects. Email campaigns are effective because they reach people at a time when they are most receptive to engagement (their inbox). You can build email lists, send newsletters and advertise your products or services through email.
Learn to wear many hats (by being a student of marketing)
In the digital marketing world, we have to wear many hats. We’re a company’s only resource to accomplish branding, website design, e-commerce, SEO, SEM, PPC and even social media management. I get asked this question all the time… what should I focus on? Digital Marketing can be a little overwhelming at first. There are so many different things that need to be done for a well-rounded online presence. Here’s how you can learn digital marketing and master it!
Learn how to teach yourself for free
If you want to learn digital marketing. Here are the steps that I recommend:
Set a goal: What do you want to achieve? Do you want to get a job in digital marketing, or do you want to start earning money online? Maybe you just want to get better at using Facebook for your business.
How much time do you have? It takes a lot of work and effort to learn digital marketing well. If you are busy with other things, like school, family or work, then carve out just as much time as you can. Only then will it make sense to start learning.
Find a mentor: This can be an extremely valuable resource for learning digital marketing fast. A mentor will hold your hand through the process and help you avoid the mistakes that others have made before you. You’ll learn faster and with less frustration than if you try to go it alone.
If you don’t have anyone around who can fill this role, then reach out online through forums or social media groups and ask around for recommendations.
Learn on your own: If there’s no one around who can teach you what you need to know, then it’s time to learn on your own. Learn from books, websites and videos until you feel comfortable enough with the subject matter.
Here are some free resources.
The most important thing that you need to do is to DO something. You won’t learn digital marketing by simply reading about it or watching videos, the most effective way to learn anything is by actually doing it. The process of trial and error will help you understand how things work, then you will be able to improve upon your mistakes with each new attempt.
