The Meta Pixel tracks what people do on your website from their browser. Ad blockers, privacy settings and short cookie lifetimes mean it misses a lot. The Conversions API (CAPI) sends the same events from your server as well, so Meta sees more of your conversions and can optimise your ads better.
On WordPress you can set it up without writing code. Here is how.
What you need
- A Meta Business Manager with your ad account and Pixel (dataset)
- Admin access to your WordPress site
- About 20 minutes
Option 1: the official Meta plugin
- In WordPress, go to Plugins, Add New, and search for Meta pixel for WordPress (published by Meta).
- Install and activate it, then open its settings page.
- Click Get started and log in with the Facebook account that manages your Business Manager.
- Choose your business, ad account and Pixel, and allow the connection. The plugin sets up both the Pixel and the Conversions API.
- Make sure the events you need are enabled, such as PageView, Lead and Purchase. Form plugins like WPForms and Contact Form 7, and WooCommerce, are supported.
Option 2: through your form or ecommerce plugin
WooCommerce and many form and CRM tools have their own Conversions API integrations. Use one route per event, not two, or the same lead may be counted twice.
Test that it works
- In Events Manager, open your dataset and go to Test events.
- Enter your website address and submit a test lead or purchase.
- Check that each event appears from both “Browser” and “Server”, and that they are de-duplicated (Meta uses the event ID to match them).
Improve Event Match Quality
Event Match Quality shows how well Meta can match your events to people. To improve it:
- Send hashed email and phone number with lead and purchase events, which the official plugin does when forms collect them
- Keep the _fbp and _fbc browser identifiers. Note that caching plugins can interfere with them, so test after any caching change.
- Send events in real time, not in daily batches
Go further: send CRM outcomes
For lead generation, the biggest gain comes from telling Meta which leads became qualified or bought. Sending CRM stages back as events lets Meta optimise for real customers, not just form fills. This is part of my CRM consulting work.
